Just how many kids have access to technology?

June 23, 2017

It turns out it's almost all of them! We might have suspected this but a summary report released by the UKCCIS paints a surprising (and maybe a little concerning) picture.

86% of kids aged between 5 and 16 in the UK have their own computer. This is split about 67% to 33% for a tablet vs a laptop or desktop. The massive increase in social media and app use have pushed tablet and smart phone usage way beyond that of traditional computers.

But even if they don't own their own devices, nearly every child (a whopping 94%!) has access to at least one device in their own home, and a large majority (71%) said they accessed the internet from their own bedrooms.

So how does this usage look and how much time are our children spending online?

Well, surprise surprise, mostly it's social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and video content giant YouTube taking the lion share of the nearly 3-hours-a-day-average screen time. As kids get older, their favourite means of chatting with their friends swings from Snapchat to Instagram, with a little under half saying they use it every day.

This compelling evidence reinforces the vital importance of parents finding time to become involved with their kids' technology interests, use and content consumption, helping them to develop critical thinking about what they see online. internet-matters.org has a fantastic website with guides for setting up parental controls on pretty much every device imaginable, from iPhones to WiFi routers and we really recommend setting them up if you haven't already!
